PBT Compounds
Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT) is a thermoplastic crystalline polymer that is mechanically strong, resistant to solvents and exhibits low shrinkage during its formation. PBT can also withstand temperatures up to 150°C (or 200°C when reinforced with glass fibers). It can be made fireproof by adding flame retardants.
Features:
- High robustness and strength
- Very good size stability
- Low water absorption capacity
- High resistance to many chemicals
- Compounds:
- Unreinforced
- Glass Fiber Reinforced
- Glass Bead Reinforced
- Mineral Filled
- Lubricated
- Surface Modified
- Flame Retardant
- Impact Resistant
- UV Resistant
- Heat Resistant
- Laser Markable
Chemical and Physical Properties:
- It has good stain resistance and mechanical properties.
- It offers high rigidity, strength and toughness as well as short-term mechanical properties.
- It provides high dimensional stability due to low moisture absorption
- Its creep resistance is good
- It has resistance to strong chemicals such as diluted acids, alcohols, hydrocarbons, aromatics,
- ketones, etc. under thermal stress and severe chemical conditions. It is especially used in automotive under body parts.
- High di-electricity and electrical resistance minimizes energy loss
- in high frequency electronic applications.
- It prevents UV radiation and thermal aging
- In addition, the properties of PBT include:
- Exceptional weather resistance
- Excellent thermal aging behavior
Disadvantages:
- High mold shrinkage
- Poor resistance to hydrolysis (sensitive to hot water)
- Prone to bending due to differential shrinkage
- Unreinforced PBT has low notched impact resistance
- PBT Alloys
- PBT/PC Blends: High toughness up to -40 °C, heat resistance up to 140 °C, improved weatherability,
- good UV resistance, high color retention. Food and drug (FDA approved)
- compliant.
- PBT/ASA: An alloy with improved surface quality, scratch properties and UV resistance.
- It offers the advantage of lower specific gravity compared to PBT without additives.
- PBT/PET: Improved mechanical properties.
